Η κινητήριος δύναμη όλων των ταινιών βρίσκεται πίσω από την καλλιτεχνική ματιά των σκηνοθετών τους. Είναι εκείνοι που φαντάζονται την πραγμάτωση ενός σεναρίου, ελέγχουν τις καλλιτεχνικές πτυχές του έργου και καθοδηγούν το τεχνικό συνεργείο και τους ηθοποιούς. Αναπτύσσουν ένα όραμα και αποφασίζουν πώς πρέπει να δείχνει και τί θα πρέπει να αποκομίσει το κοινό από αυτό. Κατά κάποιο τρόπο, είναι οι κύριοι αφηγητές μιας ιστορίας.
Πασίγνωστοι, απλώς γνωστοί ή άγνωστοι στο ευρύ κοινό, σπουδαγμένοι, με καριέρες συχνά ακαδημαϊκές, ή εμπειροτέχνες, άλλοτε ηθοποιοί που μεταπήδησαν στην σκηνοθεσία, ή παρέμειναν και στον χώρο της υποκριτικής, οι σκηνοθέτες παραμένουν ο θεμέλιος λίθος, που πάνω του οικοδομήθηκε το σινεμά & το θέατρο.Ο ελληνικός κινηματογράφος, ως γνήσιο τέκνο του ευρωπαϊκού, επηρεάζεται από τα συνηπειρωτικά είδη και δηλώνει τον θαυμασμό του γι' αυτά.
Στο παρόν αφιέρωμα, νέοι αλλά και καταξιωμένοι έλληνες σκηνοθέτες, προτείνουν και προλογίζουν τις δικές τους αγαπημένες ευρωπαίκες ταινίες και τους δημιουργούς τους.

Ο Δήμος Αβδελιώδης, είναι ο δημιουργός εκείνος που ποτέ δεν αντιμετώπισε την τέχνη ως επάγγελμα. Ενδιαφέρεται για το αρχέτυπο και τείνει σε αυτό ψάχνοντας την αλήθεια ή, έστω, τα σωστά κριτήρια. Σπούδασε φιλοσοφία, παρακολούθησε υποκριτική, δίδαξε κινηματογράφο στο Πάντειο Πανεπιστήμιο, διετέλεσε καλλιτεχνικός διευθυντής του ΔΗΠΕΘΕ Βορείου Αιγαίου και παραμένει σκηνοθέτης & σεναριογράφος. 'Εχει στην κατοχή του βραβείο FIPRESCI και τα έργα του έχουν διακριθεί σε διάφορα φεστιβάλ ανά τον κόσμο, Κάννες, Βερολίνο, Δράμα, Νέο Δελχί, Θεσσαλονίκη. Προτείνει το "La regle du jeu" του Jean Renoir, γιατί είναι αλησμόνητο εξαιτίας του οίστρου, του ενθουσιώδους παραληρήματος, και παράλληλα της γλυκόπικρης τραγικής ειρωνείας, που διατρέχει πηγαία και αφοπλιστικα την ταινία.

Ο Αλέξανδρος Αβρανάς, ήρθε στην Αθήνα για να σπουδάσει γλυπτική στην Ανωτάτη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών. Αποφοίτησε, αλλά τελικά τον κέρδισε το Βερολίνο. Για την πρώτη του ταινία, "Without", κέρδισε επτά βραβεία στο 49ο Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου της Θεσσαλονίκης και προτάθηκε για το βραβείο σκηνοθεσίας στο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου του Μιλάνου. Για την ταινία του "Miss Violence", έφυγε με τέσσερα βραβεία από το Φεστιβάλ της Βενετίας το 2013, τα δύο είναι τα πιο σημαντικά που έχει λάβει ελληνική ταινία εδώ και χρόνια στη συγκεκριμένη διοργάνωση. Προτείνει το "Salo" του Pier Paolo Pasolini, θαυμάζοντας την τόλμη του γι' αυτό το έργο τέχνης που δεν έχει λειανθεί, από ένα βαθιά σκεπτόμενο άνθρωπο, με πολιτική θέση στα πράγματα.

Ο Νίκος Παναγιωτόπουλος σπούδασε σκηνοθεσία κινηματογράφου στην Αθήνα, και παρακολούθησε μαθήματα κινηματογράφου στο ινστιτούτο Φιλμολογίας της Σορβόνης. Από το 1974 σκηνοθετεί, με ξεχωριστό αφηγηματικό στυλ. Φανατικός πολέμιος του ρεαλισμού, διανύει στις ταινίες του παράξενες, γεναιόδωρες διαδρομές. Οι ταινίες του έχουν συμμετάσχει σε διεθνή φεστιβάλ και έχουν τιμηθεί με σημαντικές διακρίσεις (Χρυσή Λεοπάρδαλη στο Φεστιβάλ του Λοκάρνο, βραβείο FIPRESCI κ.ά.). Προτείνει την καλύτερη για εκείνον ταινία στην καρίερα του Jacques Demy, τη "Lola", εντυπωσιασμένος από την κομψότητα που η ταινία αντιπαραθέτει στην απελπισία. Για εκείνον, είναι το αίνιγμα της τέχνης που έκανε το θαύμα του ακόμα μία φορά.

Ο Δημήτρης Παναγιωτάτος, είναι συγγραφέας, σκηνοθέτης και θεωρητικός του κινηματογράφου. Σπούδασε κινηματογράφο στο Παρίσι, έγραψε βιβλία, άρθρα, μελέτες και υπήρξε ιδρυτικό μέλος της Ελληνικής
Ακαδημίας Κινηματογράφου. Γοητεύθηκε από το θρίλερ, το φιλμ νουάρ, το φανταστικό, την επιστημονική φαντασία, είδη σπάνια στον ελληνικό κινηματογράφο, κι όμως πολύ ελληνικά, όπως πιστεύει, τα οποία αναμειγνύει στις ταινίες του με έναν ιδιόμορφο ερωτισμό. Με πολλές διακρίσεις και υποψηφιότητες στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό (Σαν Σεμπαστιάν, Βαρκελώνη, Μόντρεαλ, Ν. Υόρκη, Παρίσι, Αλεξάνδρεια κ.α.). Προτείνει το ψυχολογικό θρίλερ "Tras el crystal", την πρώτη μεγάλη μήκους ταινία του Agustí Villaronga, που τον στοίχειωσε και τον σόκαρε όταν του υπενθύμισε την τρομακτική αλήθεια του.

Ο Γιάννης Οικονομίδης ήρθε στην Αθήνα για να σπουδάσει νομικά, αλλά στο τρίτο έτος εγκατέλειψε τη Νομική και ξεκίνησε σπουδές κινηματογράφου. Οι ταινίες του είναι γροθιά στο στομάχι και αποτελούν εξαιρετικό δείγμα σαρκαστικής και καταγγελτικής κινηματογραφίας. 'Εχει στην κατοχή του διακρίσεις από το Φεστιβάλ Ταινιών Μικρού Μήκους της Δράμας, βραβείο της Πανελλήνιας Ένωσης Κριτικών Κινηματογράφου, Βραβείο Καλύτερης Ελληνικής Ταινίας στο Φεστιβάλ Θεσσαλονίκης και στην Ελληνική Ακαδημία Κινηματογράφου, βραβεία Σκηνοθεσίας, Σεναρίου και συμμετοχή στις Κάννες. Προτείνει το "The Death of Mr.Lazaresku" του Cristi Puiu, γιατί είναι η ταινία που τον εμβόλισε. Ένα από τα λίγα έργα τέχνης που τον μετατόπισαν και τον έκαναν να βιώσει τόσο έντονα θυμό και παράπονο.

Ο Δημήτρης Αθανίτης με σπουδές Αρχιτεκτονικής στο βιογραφικό του, δεν είναι καθόλου παράξενο που επαναφέρει σταθερά στο έργο του τις πολλαπλές όψεις της Αθήνας. Η πρώτη ταινία του κέρδισε δύο διακρίσεις στο Φεστιβάλ Θεσσαλονίκης, ενώ η δεύτερη ταινία του ήταν υποψήφια για τον Χρυσό Αλέξανδρο και κέρδισε το Βραβείο Ερμηνείας. Ο πρώτος γενικός γραμματέας -και ιδρυτικό μέλος- της Ελληνικής Ακαδημίας του Κινηματογράφου αγαπά την άποψη, το στυλ και την οικονομία χρόνου και αντιπαθεί το πομπώδες, το δήθεν και το αναμάσημα των κλισέ. Προτείνει το "The State of Things" του Wim Wenders, γοητευμένος από τις ασπρόμαυρες εικόνες της, από το μοναδικό ταξίδι της στα κινηματογραφικά είδη και από την απόπειρα της για συνολική επανατοποθέτηση του σινεμά και της θέσης των δημιουργών του.

Ο Γιάννης Σακαρίδης σπούδασε Φωτογραφία, Ιστορία Τέχνης και Κινηματογράφο στο Λονδίνο. Γύρισε ντοκιμαντέρ για το BBC, ταινίες μικρού μήκους και συμμετείχε σε 14 παραγωγές. Τιμήθηκε με Ειδική Μνεία στα Κρατικά Βραβεία Ποιότητας στη Θεσσαλονίκη, με το Ειδικό βραβείο της Επιτροπής και το βραβείο Καλύτερης Μουσικής του 29ου Φεστιβάλ Ελληνικών Ταινιών Μικρού Μήκους Δράμας και το πρώτο βραβείο στο 4ο Crossroads Co-production Forum στο Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου Θεσσαλονίκης και είχε μια απίστευτη φεστιβαλική διαδρομή από το Τορόντο στην Κορέα, στο Σάο Πάολο για να φτάσει επίσης σε πολλές ευρωπαϊκές διοργανώσεις, και στο Φεστιβάλ Θεσσαλονίκης. Προτείνει το "My Name is Joe" του Ken Loach, μια ταινία με έντονο το κωμικοτραγικό στοιχείο, βαθιά συναισθηματική και συγκινητική, φτιαγμένη με πάθος και μαεστρία από τον σκηνοθέτη της.

Ο Βασίλης Μαζωμένος έχει δώσει διαλέξεις, συμμετείχε και διεύθυνε ημερίδες και συνέδρια για τον κινηματογράφο, ασχολήθηκε με την διδασκαλία του. Έχει διατελέσει μέλος διεθνών κριτικών επιτροπών σε κινηματογραφικά φεστιβάλ, καλλιτεχνικός διευθυντής του Διεθνούς Φεστιβάλ Ντοκιμαντέρ της Καλαμάτας και αντιπρόεδρος στο Ελληνικό Κέντρο Κινηματογράφου. Είναι σκηνοθέτης, σεναριογράφος, συγγραφέας και παραγωγός ταινιών, μέλος της Ευρωπαϊκής και της Ελληνικής Ακαδημίας Κινηματογράφου. Έχει πάμπολλες υποψηφιότητες για βραβείο καλύτερης ταινίας διεθνώς, κρατικά βραβεία, ένα διεθνές βραβείο καριέρας (Fantasporto 2001), το ειδικό βραβείο της επιτροπής στο φεστιβάλ Θεσσαλονίκης και βραβεία στο Λονδίνο και την Κύπρο. Προτείνει το "L' annee dernier a Marienbad" του Alain Resnais, την επιτομή του σύγχρονου κινηματογράφου, όπως την αποκαλεί. Ένα έργο που ξεπερνά τις διαστάσεις μιας ταινίας και γίνεται εμπειρία.

The movie is based on the fascinating, true story of a feral boy whom hunters found among wolves in a forest in the mountains of Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH) in the mid-1980s. The boy was sent to the institution for children in an attempt to socialize him and got the Muslim name – Haris. Contrary to most predictions, he was developing and making friends quickly. When the war in BiH broke out in 1992, Haris got the letter from local Bosnian authorities which asked for his immediate return. Upon returning to BiH, he had nowhere to go. While wandering aimlessly, he came across a group of soldiers that gave him a gun and took him with them.

The film is about the well-known "Polk case", involving the murder of the American journalist George Polk. He came to Greece to interview Markos Vafiadis and was found dead under mysterious circumstances. A Greek left-wing journalist, Aimos Vagenas, is arrested and accused of being involved in the murder. His guilt cannot be proven. Free, he starts investigating the murder for which he was accused. Meanwhile, the police pin the crime on someone else, the Jewish university student Zadik, who commits suicide while in jail. Vagenas locates and convinces some of the witnesses to testify.

Based on Alexandros Papadiamantis’ novella, the film tells the story of Frangoyiannou,  a poor woman, mother & grandmother. She kills female babies, 5 in total, thus killing herself - especially when she kills her granddaughter who was given her name-. Thus, she is ‘rebelling’ against the unjust fate that life and society reserved for her. This is her way of sparing children the inevitable suffering in life. Her mind is deranged, due to her troubled life. Being pursued by the police, she perishes in the sea.

During 1940, while the war is at its peak, the wife of a lieutenant and a sergeant fall madly in love. The war situation and military duty on the one hand and friendship between the two men, on the other, prohibit this love, but do not negate it. Euridice is waiting to be transferred ‘someplace else’, because her incarceration in this place is over. She lives in a country under a dictatorial regime. Costas had a first-hand experience of the French May insurrection and played a key role in his rebellious generation. Now in his forties, he feels alienated in all modern social or ideological groups. He leaves the commune he is living in and walks out into the boulevard. He encounters friends and starts a relationship with his former girlfriend. But peace does not come and his soul still feels empty. Santa Claus tries to outrun a gang of knife-wielding youth. It's one of several vignettes of Palestinian life in Israel - in a neighborhood in Nazareth and at Al-Ram checkpoint in East Jerusalem. Most of the stories are droll, some absurd, one is mythic and fanciful; few words are spoken. A man who goes through his mail methodically each morning has a heart attack. His son visits him in hospital. The son regularly meets a woman at Al-Ram; they sit in a car, hands caressing. Once, she defies Israeli guards at the checkpoint; later, ninja-like, she takes on soldiers at a target range. A red balloon floats free overhead. Neighbors toss garbage over walls.
