Elisabet Vogler is a famous actress who suddenly becomes mute on stage during a performance of Elektra. The young actress becomes catatonic refusing to talk or move. A young nurse called Alma is assigned to be her caretaker. After spending three months in a psychiatric hospital the doctors are determined that Elizabet’s condition is due to the lack of willpower, so she is sent to a secluded seaside house for recovery with Alma to look after her. The two women spend a lot of time alone together and soon form a powerful bond.
