When she finds out that an old acquaintance of hers, Henriette is working as a prostitute in a high-class brothel in Paris she doesn’t hesitate to visit the brothel. Although at first feels a little uncomfortable with both the thought and the actual action of having sex with men for money, soon Séverine is hired to work at her obsessive profession as a prostitute herself with the nickname «Belle de Jour» as she works only in the afternoons. Her life takes a turn when a client, Marcel, falls in love with her and decides to claim her.
