27th Panorama of European Cinema

OCTOBER 16-26 AT THE MOVIE THEATERS ASTI AND AAVORA

The longest running film festival of Athens returns for the 27th consecutive year from October 16 to October 26, renewing its Autumn rendezvous with the film enthusiasts.

In the fourteen-day long 27th Panorama, 70 movies from the European and worldwide cinema will be presented in the movie theaters Aavora from October 16 to October 22, and Asti from October 16 to October 29. (Some of the films from the main program will be re-shown from October 15 to October 29 at the movie theater Asti).

The official launch of this year's festival will be held on Thursday, October 16 in the movie theater Asti, with the screening of John Boorman's film "Queen and Country", which is the highly anticipated sequel of "Hope and Glory". Nine years after the events shown in the Best Picture Oscar Nominated 1987 film, "Queen and Country" find its protagonist, Bill Rohan, eighteen years old and wishing to live away from his family home. Bill joins the army to fight in the Korean War. There he meets Percy, an amoral prankster, together they will plot the downfall of their cruel tormentor, Sergeant Major Bradley. During their leave of absence, Bill falls for a troubled beauty, while Percy falls madly in love with Bill's sister Dawn. The reality of war finally hits home when Bill is confronted with the shattered lives of wounded boys returning from Korea. The film stars Callum Turner, Caleb Landry Jones and David Thewlis.

Like every year, the main theme of the Panorama Film Festival will be dedicated to the European cinema. In the well-established "In Competition" section of the festival, European films (in their first screening in Greece) will be shown, including Larry Clark's film "The Smell of Us" and Asia Argento's "Incompresa". The award will be given by a three-member committee composed by members of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI), while the Audience Award will be awarded by a five-member committee composed by the Athinorama magazine subscribers.

INCOMPRESA-5

The festival's program includes never before seen films from all over the world and a special tribute from eight Greek film directors suggesting their favorite European film. For our remaining tributes stay tuned, since in the next few days we will announce the 27th Panorama complete Program, the last film, the parallel events, the international guests and the guests of honor.

Finally, with a very simple process, this year as well, we are giving the opportunity for unemployed people to watch the movies of the Panorama for free, by offering more than 700 tickets. For every film, 10 free tickets will be available and anyone interested can get a ticket 45 minutes before the start of each screening, in a first-come, first-served basis. To get the free ticket, the physical presence of the person concerned is required, as well as the demonstration of the unemployment card, and his or her police identity.

During its 27-year run the Panorama Film Festival has hosted and awarded distinguished figures like Francis Ford Coppola, Hugh Hudson, Michelangelo Antonioni, Harold Pinter, Arthur Penn, Christopher Leigh, the "Monty Python" (Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam), Allen Curnow, Claude Sautet, Dušan Makavejev, Ken Loach, Otar Iosseliani, Jerzy Skolimowski, Harriet Andersson, Stephen Frears, Wim Wenders, Emir Kusturica, Abbas Kiarostami, Karel Reisz, Kostas Gavras, Roger Corman, Rrancesco Rossi, Ettore Scola, Taviani brothers, Agnès Varda, Max von Sydow and others.
